I have recently acquired a new hiking telephoto lens (the 500mm is just too big and heavy for long walks – not to mention you can’t easily access it in a huge backpack to shoot random encounters): the modern Nikon AF-S 300mm f4 ED IF. I got it cheap because the autofocus is knackered, but as I only use dumb adapters it was perfect for me, and this is one of the last Nikon lenses to still feature the manual aperture on the lens, so I can use it as a completely manual lens without issues.<\/p>\n
This lens replaces my much-used and loved Canon New FD 100-300mm f5.6L, which may find it’s way onto my A7ii as a landscape telephoto – but it might lose out to the heavier but much faster Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 80-200mm f2.8 LD. First impressions of the Nikon is that it is very sharp, controls CA well and works extremely well with the Nikon TC-14E 1.4x extender, which is sharp wide open giving me a 420mm f5.6 telephoto which remains compact enough to get into my shoulder back to be ready for whatever I encounter on my walks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
I’ve finally got around to reviewing a lens I’ve been using a lot lately, the highly-respected super-telephoto Canon New FD 500m f4.5L.
