If you drive North on the A4054 from Edwardsville you’ll be able to track a track on your right that takes you diagonally through the forest and up onto the ridgeway. Here you can park quite easily – but beware that the road has only a few passing points and they are often quite far apart, so meeting cars coming the other way would not be ideal. I did this walk on a Monday evening and only saw one other car the whole time.

On the walk above you’ll see I first walked the nearby Mynydd Cilfach-yr-encil before heading on the very short loop up to Cefn Merthyr and back.

I walked up the hill with the stone wall and fence on my left, which means you when you get to the wall you can head down a bit to a gate that is easy to climb as large rocks have been placed either side of it. The summit is marked by a rock at the base of a telegraph pole. Not ideal, but at least you know you’re in the right place!

Nice views, again, and due to the wall no litter, just some sheep relaxing in the evening sun. You can head further South for Cairns and other bits and pieces, but this was my third hill of the evening so I headed straight back to the car via the track.
